The Black Rifle or Colors?
For most people reading this we can remember when AR15’s only came in a few options, and most to all were black. Sure, you could get different lengths, makes, and even calibers, but off the shelf we were still limited to the classic “black rifle”. What did all of those years of one color option lead to? You guessed it! Safes and collections that had numerous amounts of black guns. This sea of sameness deserved something new, something fresh, and something that blends into environments. Behold the color scheme craze was born! At first it was parts and accessories with a handguard or buttstock here or there, and now it has evolved into a “must have” for any progressive rifle maker/owner.
For several years, many different finishes/processes have competed for king of the castle, and the market has settled for 2 different types. Hydro dipping and Cerakote –these are the two main options for a rifle in a different color option other than black. Hydro dipping provides very intricate and precise patterns, such as your favorite camo pattern via a chemically activated adhesion process. Cerakote is patented finish which is applied to a firearm similar to paint, but much tougher and allows much more freedom as far as pattern, colors, custom lettering and many other options. The two major advantages to going with one of these two finishes are that the gun becomes extremely protected against environmental elements and scratching. After a long day in the field a gun needs to be maintained, in order to prevent corrosion and a numerous amount of possible problems. While firearm maintenance/routines should not change regardless of weapon style, platform, and finish -using either Cerakote or Hydro dipping provides an added extra layer of defense.
Having a gun that blends into the environment while hunting is a major bonus factor when in the field, or when on patrol & sometimes that color is black -therefore any good and progressive gun manufacturer will offer an array of both options. For some it’s a simple issue of changing up their collection, for some it’s a necessity when concealment is non-negotiable. As previously stated with hydro dipping and Cerakote, your favorite patterns like “Mossy Oak” Real Tree, “Kryptek”, or “Kuiu” Verde can be applied, making the owner’s camo and firearm a complete package.
